In this paper, we surveyed the basic concepts of one of the most emerging field of space-time coding for wireless communication systems. Spatial & the capacity of the Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) wireless channel in Rayleigh fading are studied & literature survey of them are discussed. The structure of the signal enables us to exploit diversity in the spatial & temporal dimensions in order to obtain improved bit error performance & higher data rates without bandwidth expansion. Thus it is observed that transmit diversity plays an integral role in space-time code design. A brief survey of such existing communication techniques are discussed in this paper. Various encoding schemes & receiver architectures for space time coding are also discussed along with their comparison. This paper also explores the research avenues in design of perfect (NxN). Alamouti space–time codes which have been introduced as the class of linear dispersion space–time codes having full rate, non-vanishing determinant, a signal constellation isomorphic to either the rectangular or hexagonal lattices & uniform average transmitted energy per antenna.
