Magnesium is a chemical active element which can form intermetallic compound with other alloying element such as aluminium, calcium, copper etc. and due to its low density and light weight it has wide range of application in the field of automobiles, aerospace, electronics, medicines, sports etc. Friction stir welding (FSW) is a promising welding technique used for joining Magnesium alloys. The present paper gives an overview of friction stir welding of magnesium alloys explored through various research studies and experiments in a systematic and chronological order. It also gives the impact of different welding parameters on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the FSW joints of magnesium alloys.
