Authors

Abstract

Water is one of the most important natural resource which supports both human needs and economic development. Out of 2.5% global fresh water, only 1% is available for human consumption. Groundwater is an important source of drinking water for people around the world, especially in rural areas. There are about one million people, who are directly dependent upon the groundwater resources in Asia and almost 90% of the rural population of India depend on groundwater for drinking, domestic and agricultural purposes. Groundwater pollution has been reported in many areas. The main groundwater pollutants are heavy metals nitrate and organic compounds such as pesticides etc. An attempt was made in this study to evaluate the impact of unplanned industrial setup and untreated dumping of waste on physico-chemical characteristics of ground water in Samba district of Jammu division.
