Sustainable energy is the golden thread that connects economic growth, social equity, and a climate and environment that enables the world to thrive. Deep reductions in emissions are possible without undermining the global economy through rapid and significant advancement and deployment in climate-friendly technologies such as renewable energy and emerging technologies such as carbon capture and storage. Such technologies will expand the options for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and thus for international cooperation. Progress at the global level must be coupled by action on the ground. Steps should be taken to stabilize the concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere at a level that would prevent dangerous anthropogenic interference with the climate system.
