Title

Depression, anxiety and Stress: Prevalence and their co-relation among non teaching staff of Aligarh Muslim university (AMU)

Abstract

Introduction: Mental health is one of the most important and growing public health concern for which epidemiological data are needed. A population being indulge in any kind of occupation experience stress and hence are more prone to develop anxiety and depression. Objective: The objective of the study was to identify the impact of mood disorders, especially anxiety and depression among Non-teaching staff of AMU. The study focused on knowing the difference between gender and to see the prevalence and level of depression and anxiety they have. Method: Depressive and anxiety disorders were assessed with the help of Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS 21). Two measures were applied, one for level of anxiety and other for level of depression on a random population of 120 people working in Registrar Office. Results: 120 people participated in the study. The minimum age of the participant was 26yrs and maximum was 59 years. Over half (54%) reported above normal scores for depression, anxiety and/or stress. Most of them were males 76 (66.66%). Conclusion: DASS 21 scale helped to identify patients at risk of long term symptoms of depression, anxiety and stress and hence it can be concluded that these disorders prevail among non teaching staff of AMU.
