Abstract

Chitosan nanoparticles synthesized in the laboratory were used for the removal of copper and zinc from synthetically prepared wastewater. These nanoparticles are produced by interaction of chitosan with sodium tripolyphosphate. The synthesized particles were characterized using scanning electron microscopy and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy . Batch adsorption studies were conducted to study the effects of pH, adsorption dosage, contact time and temperature. The optimum conditions obtained were 200 mg adsorbent dose, 360 min contact time, and pH 5 for copper and 150 min contact time, 200 mg adsorbent dose and pH 7 for zinc.
