Dimensional Analysis of Formdrilling Parameters by Using Matrix Method of Buckingham π-Theorem

Aim is to investigate the formdrilling parameters using Buckingham Pi-Theorem and identifying the most effective parameters for effective heat generation. Formdrilling is a non conventional drilling process, No-Chip machining process. In formdrilling, a rotating conical tool uses the heat generated by friction to soften and penetrate into a thin workpiece and create a bushing without generating chips. The conical tungsten carbide tool is used for form drilling of Al-8011workpiece. The objective is identify the most effective parameters which gives a cylindrical shaped bushing without significant radial fracture or petal formation when three ideas of machining the workpiece and high speed friction drilling are proposed. Effects of workpiece temperature, spindle speed, and feed rate on experimentally measured torque, Heat generated and bushing shape were analyzed. Varying spindle speed shows mixed results in bushing formation of three different machining methods. The Heat energy, Torque and Temperature for friction drilling were analyzed to demonstrate quantitatively the benefits of workpiece.
