Title

Cross polarization reduction in a Probe-fed Microstrip Patch Antenna using Symmetric Rectangular DGS slots for L and part of S band Application

Abstract

An attempt is made to reduce the cross-polarized (XP) radiation in a Microstrip Patch Antenna (MPA) using defected ground structure (DGS) is proposed in this work. The antenna is designed and simulated using HFSS 15.0v. The conventional MPA is designed with a centre frequency of 2.4 GHz using coaxial feed produces cross polarization level at -21 dB, -21 dB with a peak gain of 7.99 dB. The conventional MPA is modified by defecting, the ground plane with a two rectangular slots of dimension (60 X 1) mm2. The modified MPA gives three resonating modes at 1.66 GHz with a peak gain of 5.5 dB, at 1.79 GHz with a peak gain of 3.76 dB and 2.17 GHz without changing the co-polarized broadside radiation and peak gain. The third mode shows a compactness of 170 MHz and XP level obtained at -39dB and -34dB. The modified MPA gives an XP suppression of 14 dB with co-pol to cross-pol isolation of 42 dB. All the three resonating modes are dominant type and the third resonating mode gives an XP suppression of 14 dB compare to conventional. The MPAs are designed using RT/Duriod-5880 dielectric material with r=2.2
