The power generated with the photovoltaic (PV) systems will be in DC. To connect this system to electric grid, the generated power needs to be converted to AC which is done through power conditioning unit (inverter). The majority of contemporary inverters used in DG systems are current source inverters (CSI) operating at unity power factor. If, however, we assume that voltage source inverters (VSI) can replace CSIs, we can generate reactive power proportionally to the remaining unused capacity at any given time. The aim of the work is to control the flow of active power to grid according to availability of insolation level. This work also presents the control of reactive power, i.e. reactive power supplied to and absorbed from the grid according to availability of active power from PV system.
