Abstract

A study on, the effect of Bhopal gas tragedy on the productive women population Author : Miss. Greema Michael K Designation : PhD Research Scholar , Department of Public Administration Madras Christian College ,Chennai, India – 600 059 Abstract This research study how the tragedy that struck Bhopal 34 years ago following methyl isocycante leak from an industrial unit has worsened the life of women in Bhopal. Subjects in this study were women who exposed to gas, those who born before and after the gas tragedy. All the respondents in this study lived around one km northeast of the Union Carbide Pesticide plant at the time of the accident. The research work proceeded with the help of detailed survey method in the field. Respondents said gas impacted the life of women in this city, mothers lost their kids, the women who exposed to gas on that not been able to become a mother ever since the tragedy and the worst affected are those whose children were born with diseases and deformities. Women in Bhopal left with no choice they had to come out on the streets after deaths in their families. Some of them got some small, minor jobs with organisations aid. Victims have faced very demotivating approaches from government agencies when they demanded compensations and came up with morchas and protests .Most of the respondents argued no proper compensation, medical rehabilitation, economic rehabilitation or environmental rehabilitation has provided by government or any other NGOs. This research highlights the Impact of the gas leak on the productive women population of J.P Nagar Keywords : Bhopal gas tragedy , methyl isocynate , victims , union carbide, pesticide plant , NGO , J.P Nagar.
