Title

MATERIAL OPTIMIZATION OF STEERING KNUCKLE FOR LOW SPEED VEHICLE

Abstract

Steering knuckle is a crucial component in a car, its main function is to bare load and produce steering effect and which support the body weight, to withstand the front and back brake braking torque so on. In the present work, static and modal analysis of steering knuckle was carried out. Analysis was done in ANSYS WORKBENCH by constraining the knuckle, applying loads and moments. In this project also done shape optimization was also carried out for the same steering knuckle and for various materials. Shape optimization of knuckle was done using ANSYS WORKBENCH with the objective of reducing the weight. Multiaxial load analysis has been conducted for knuckle steering by considering different materials and the results were compared for the Al Alloy, Grey cast iron, AISI 4340(Structural Steel) and Magnesium alloy. The results indicate that the brake calliper region of knuckle is critical. After analysis it is observed that structural steel is best material for knuckle steering.
