The idea of Wabi-Aabi emerged in 15th century Japan and embraces things as it is. It accepts imperfection, impermanence, and the passing of time. Wabi loosely translates to simplicity, fulfilment, peace, and modesty. Sabi loosely translates to the acceptance and appreciation of the persistence of time. Together, Wabi-Sabi is the understanding and readiness of acceptance, and the appreciation of the impermanence of what is. This concept is contrary to Western ideals that emphasises progress and growth as necessary components to daily living. Chitra Banerjee Devakaruni’s short story “Arranged Marriage” critiques marriage in a diasporic narrative highlighting the constant struggle of Mrinal and her final acceptance of life with all its imperfections.
