Title

Structural and Optical Characterization of Synthesized ZnS: Cu Nanoparticles

Abstract

In the present work, we have reported the synthesis, structural and optical properties of pure and copper doped (ZnS) nanoparticles prepared via low- cost conventional chemical co-precipitation route with the copper concentration varying from 2 to 10 at %. The starting materials for the preparation of ZnS: Cu nanoparticles were zinc acetate as the zinc source, sodium sulphide as the sulphur source and copper (II) acetate as a copper source while DMF is used as stabilizing agent and catalyst. The nanoparticles of ZnS: Cu with cubic structure were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and the average grain size estimated and found to be about 2 to 5 nm which is also confirmed by TEM micrographs. The doping did not alter the crystal structure of the prepared samples. The morphology and particle size distribution of the prepared samples were seen through the transmission electron microscopy (TEM) which shows the synthesized nanoparticles were spherical shaped and uniformly distributed over the entire surface. The effect of Cu2+ doping concentration on the optical properties of ZnS: Cu nanoparticles have been studied using UV-Visible Diffused Reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). The optical band gap of the samples is increasing with the dopant. The presence of functional groups of pure and copper doped (ZnS) has been identified by FTIR study.
