Title

Light Weight Concrete with Metakaolin-Study of Strength Properties

Abstract

In the present experimental investigation, pumice stone was used as the light weight aggregate to replace the conventional granite aggregate in various proportions. M20 concrete is considered as the basic mix consisting of ordinary Portland cement(OPC), fine aggregate and coarse aggregate. OPC was partially replaced by metakaolin in percentages varying from 0 to 20. Conventional granite aggregate was replaced by pumice stone in various percentage from 0 to 100. The various combinations of concrete mixes were prepared with a constant water-cement ratio of 0.50. Wherever necessary, a small percentage of super plasticizer was added to maintain more or less same workability throughout the investigation. Standard cube, cylinder and beam specimens were cast, cured and tested for compressive ,split tensile and flexural strengths. The results have shown that by adding metakaolin as partially replacement to cement various strengths have been increased. Even with 40% replacement of conventional granite aggregate with pumice stone aggregate, agreeable strengths are obtained with the presence of metakaolin in the matrix.
