Title

Usage and Properties of Recycled Concrete Aggregate

Abstract

Recycled aggregates are the materials which can be used as a partial or full replacement in the natural aggregate. The application of recycled aggregates has been started in a large number of construction projects in many countries. This usage has no detrimental effects on concrete and it is expected that the increase in the cost of cement could be offset by the lower cost of Recycled Concrete Aggregate. The depletion of natural resources for aggregate will get decreased and thus it is eco friendly. Up to 20% of replacement of natural aggregate with Recycled concrete aggregate the concrete attains strength of 65 Mpa as per Dutch standard VBT 1995. Moreover, if replaced more than the standards the quality of the concrete production would be less. This paper gives us the report of the basic properties of recycled fine and coarse aggregate and also compares these properties with natural aggregates. The properties of the natural aggregates are determined and their effects on concreting work are discussed. Similarly, the properties of recycled aggregate concrete are also determined and compared with that of the natural aggregate. Various tests on aggregates and recycled aggregate concrete are discussed for the different combinations of recycled aggregate with natural aggregate. The results are tabulated along with the different percentages of replacement for compressive strength and flexural strength of concrete. Finally, 30% replacement of the recycled aggregates does not affect the functional requirements of the structure as per the results which in turn directly reduces the impact of waste material on environment
