Title

Comparative Study on Seismic Behavior of Irregular Building with RCC and CFST Columns

Authors

Abstract

Composite columns are efficient in resisting heavy loads in multistory buildings. Composite columns with concrete and steel can be used either encased or concrete filled steel tubes (CFST). Encased column consists of Steel beams encased in concrete, whereas in CFST columns the concrete is filled in steel hollow tubular columns. CFST columns have more advantages over RCC columns. CFST columns have higher load carrying capacity, larger moment carrying capacity and more ductility over RCC columns. Local buckling of steel column can be reduced drastically by filling of steel tubular section with concrete. With these advantages CFST columns can be used in tall buildings, bridge piers, oil and gas structures etc. The structures with CFST columns in irregular buildings need to be understood for effective utilization of CFST action columns. In the present, irregularity of the building is considered in terms of projection ratio i.e., ratio of projection of building to the length of the building (a/L). A Twenty floors building is considered and studied under the action of seismic loads. The study is conducted to understand the behavior of RCC columns and CFST columns in 20 floor building. A finite element software ETABS is used for the analysis. Response spectrum method is for seismic analysis of RCC and CFST column buildings. Base shear, storey shear, drifts, time periods and maximum displacements are studied.
