Title

Strengthening of Reinforced Concrete Columns Wrapped with GFRP.

Abstract

The use of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) materials for structural repair and strengthening has continuously increased in recent years, due to several advantages associated with these composites when compared to conventional materials like steel.. One of the most practical applications of these materials is concerned with the strengthening and retrofitting concrete compression members by means of external confinement with the Glass Fiber Reinforced Sheets. The role of Fiber Reinforced Polymer for strengthening of existing concrete structures is growing at an extremely rapid pace owing mainly to the ease and speed of construction, and the possibility of application without disturbing the existing functionality of the structure. In the present study experimental investigations were carried out on the behavior of standard concrete columns externally wrapped with fiber reinforced polymer composites. These concrete cylinders are subjected to pure compression with various confinement ratios. Experimental results indicate that strength of the confined concrete cylinders has significant impact on the number of layers of composites. The paper addresses the study of the effect of number of layers on the compressive failure for a given slenderness ratio using numerical technique. The experimental data, in terms of failure strength are compared with numerical technique results and the quality of the approximation is analyzed.
