Title

Lateritic Soil Stabilized With GGBS Geopolymers as a Sustainable Pavement Base Material

Abstract

In chemical stabilization, lateritic soils are stabilized by chemical reagents such as lime, cement, fly ash, pond ash et cetera. Lime and cement have been found to be effective stabilizing agents and have been in vogue for quite long. However, these are causing green house effects. This paper presents a comparison of ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) stabilized lateritic soil and geopolymerizing GGBS-lateritic soil, to ascertain its potential use in sub grades and cushion layers. The paper presents experimental results obtained from tests conducted on GGBS-soil blends and alkali activated slag - soil blends. Sodium hydroxide solution (NaOH) with 7 molarity concentration and sodium silicate solution (Na2SiO3) were added to enhance the polymerization reaction of ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS). The unconfined compressive strength of alkali activated slag – soil blends and GGBS – soil blends were investigated at varying quantities of GGBS. Interesting phenomena were observed which the paper discusses in detail.
