Title

Suitability of a Demand Responsive Pelican Crossing in Mehdipatnam Road, Hyderabad

Abstract

Walking is the most common and ancient mode of transportation. And crossing the busy street is the most dangerous aspect of being a pedestrian. Pelican Crossings are a suitable means of pedestrian midblock crossings. However, to use it in a mixed traffic condition, with diverse traffic, lack of lane discipline and higher proportion of two wheeler and bus traffic is a challenge. Most of the Indian Cities do not provide pedestrian demand based crossing infrastructure. Pedestrian crossings are required to be installed to provide pedestrians with a safe method of crossing the road without incurring excessive delay. This paper evaluates the need of a pedestrian demand responsive signal system. The analysis required to warrant the signal is studied and found to be warranting a midblock signal. To evaluate the effect of infrastructure improvements it is important to understand the pedestrian movements, volume of pedestrians and their path choices. A study was made for the above mentioned parameters at Mehdipatnam, Hyderabad. The design of signal timings is calculated after estimating the pedestrian volume, average crossing time and level of service at the study area. The program to interrupt the existing green and allot crossing time (on priority basis) for pedestrian was developed using Fritzing (Virtual Adrunio) and C Programming Language. Provision of this type of pedestrian infrastructures can enhance the safety of pedestrians to a great extend and can bring down the number of fatalities of pedestrians
