Title

Municipal Solid Waste Leachate Recirculation

Abstract

Waste is generated due to need and greed of man. Mankind has always utilizing the resources of earth to support them. Solid waste is often called the third pollution. After air and water pollution the material which arises from various human activities and which is normally discarded as useless (or) unwanted. The dumped solid wastes gradually decompose and release the by-products into water moving through it. The process by which soluble materials in the soil, such as salts, nutrients, pesticide, chemicals (or) contaminants, are washed into a lower layers of soil are dissolved and carried away by water is called leaching and resulted liquid is called leachate Leachate is generated due the decomposition and squeezing of the waste due to its self weight and by water that has entered into the landfill from external sources mainly due to precipitation. Leachate contains a high concentration of organic matter and inorganic ions, including heavy metals. Leachate from municipal solid waste landfills is a highly concentrated that small amounts of leachate can pollute large amount of groundwater rendering its suitability for use domestic requirements. One of the most severe threat caused due to leachate is contamination of ground water when it percolates fromlandfills. Not only the ground water is contaminated but also there is a problem to surface water when it is disposed off (or) when its level rises above in land fills The main objective of study of this work is to suggest the method to study the characteristics of re-circulatedLeachate like pH, conductivity, total dissolved solids, total hardness, calcium hardness, magnesium hardness, Alkalinity, chlorides sulphates, BOD, COD which was resulted from municipal solid waste and comparing the characteristics with non-re-circulated Leachate. And also to decrease the ground water contamination, to reduce the environmental threat, to reduce treatment costs of the landfill.
