Title

Groundwater Recharge Modelling of Vadose Zone Using HYDRUS-1D: A General Model

Abstract

Groundwater is one of the important, valuable and renewable resources of India. It has the ability to act as a large underground reservoir that provides freshwater during periods of drought due to failure of monsoon. In arid regions, the knowledge of groundwater recharge is an important information for the sustainable management of limited water resources. Groundwater recharge may be limited by the capacity of the Vadose zone to transmit water to the aquifer. For this purpose, the HYDRUS-1D is being used successfully to model and to evaluate the recharging capacity through the Vadose zone. This software includes the one-dimensional FEM for simulating the movement of water in Vadose zone. The model is supported by an interactive graphics-based interface for data-processing, discretization of the soil profile, and graphic presentation of the results. In the present work, the main objective is to simulate potential groundwater recharging capacity of the Vadose zone. For general simulation purpose, the Hyderabad (the capital of Telangana State of India) soil profiles were considered and modelling was carried out for depiction of the results. The results from the study shows the variation of recharge when soil profiles are interchanged within a fixed depth of the model considered for various temporal variations of precipitation
