Title

Automatic Power Factor correction using Microcontroller 8051

Abstract

To minimize the penalty of industrial units using the automatic correction unit of the power factor The power factor is defined as the ratio between the real power and the apparent power. This definition is often represented mathematically as KW / KVA, where the numerator is the active (real) power and the denominator is the (active + reactive) or apparent power. Reactive power is the non-functional power generated by magnetic and inductive loads, to generate magnetic flux. The increase in reactive power increases the apparent power, so the power factor also decreases. With a low power factor, the industry needs more energy to meet its demand, so efficiency decreases. In this proposed system, the time delay between the zero voltage pulse and the zero current pulse, duly generated by the appropriate operational amplifier circuits in comparator mode, is fed to two interrupt pins of the microcontroller. Displays the time delay between current and voltage on an LCD screen. The program assumes control to activate the appropriate number of relays from its output to bring branch capacitors to the load circuit to obtain the power factor until it reaches the unit. The microcontroller used in the project belongs to the 8051 family. In addition, the project can be improved by using thyristor control switches instead of the relay control to avoid contact bites that are often encountered when changing capacitors due to the high peak current.
