Title

PROFITABILITY OF SELECTED FAST MOVING CONSUMER GOODS COMPANIES IN INDIA

Abstract

The Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) segment is the fourth largest sector in the Indian economy. The total FMCG market is in little over of .85,000 crores. It is currently growing at double digit growth rate and is expected to maintain a high growth rate. The market size of FMCG in India is estimated to grow from US$ 30 billion in 2011 to US$ 74 billion in 2018. Food product sector is the leading segment, accounting for 43 per cent of the overall market. Personal care (22 per cent) and fabric care (12 per cent) comes next in terms of market share. Growing awareness, easier access, and changing lifestyles have been the key growth drivers of the sector. The major activities of the food-processing sector are permitted 100 per cent foreign equity or 100 per cent NRI and Overseas Corporate Bodies (OCB) investment to meet the rising demand of the consumers. The market size of the Indian FMCG Sector is expected to reach US$ 133.44 billion by the year 2022. The Indian government has declared several tax sops for the FMCG sector in India. This sector can drive growth, enhance quality of life, create jobs and support penetration of technology. The purpose of this study is to analyse the profitability positions of the selected FMCG Companies in India which is listed in BSE. Thus, the data collected during the period 2005-2006 to 2016-2017, the tools used for analysis are mean, standard deviation, co-efficient of variation, compound annual growth rate, t test, chi-square and trend. The study found that the profitability position of selected FMCG companies in India under review emphasised better performance from the point of view of owners.
