Title

STUDY OF NOISE POLLUTION LEVEL USING NOISE INDICES IN THE CITY OF LUCKNOW, UTTAR PRADESH, INDIA

Abstract

Noise is defined as unwanted sound which is the result of pressure changes in a medium (usually air), caused by vibration or turbulence. .Lucknow, an ancient city of India, is rapidly emerging as industrialized and urbanized city and has started facing severe noise pollution problems. Community noise or environmental noise is one of the most common pollutants. ‘Community noise includes the primary sources of road, rail and air traffic, industries, construction and public works and the neighborhood' (WHO, 1999). Noise pollution monitoring and environmental impacts on human health in Lucknow City of India are discussedAssessment of day-night time noise quality was done at 10 different locations in Lucknow city for noise pollution zones.Noise pollution indices viz. L10, L50, L90, noise climate (NC), equivalent continuous noise level (Leq), noise pollution level (Lnp) and traffic noise index (TNI) were computed for all zones. The noise levels were computed in the month of September 2017 to December 2017. In the morning time (7AM-9AM) residential zones LEQ was found in the range of 77.89-81.92dB (A), in commercial zones LEQ was in the range of 72.00-84.29dB (A), in industrial zones LEQ was in the range of 68.26-73.81dB (A) and in the silence zones LEQ was in the range of 75.00-79.17dB (A).In the afternoon (12PM-2PM) noise levels were observed for residential zones LEQ was in the range of 64.70-85.25dB(A), for commercial zones LEQ was in the range of 74.90-86.78dB(A), for industrial zones LEQ was in the range of 72.32-77.84dB(A) and for silence zones LEQ was in the range of 73.19-78.64dB(A). In the evening (6PM-8PM) noise levels for residential zones LEQ were found in the range of 76.29-83.58dB (A), for commercial zones LEQ was in the range of 75.16-87.45dB (A), for industrial zones LEQ was in the range of 69.68-84.57 dB (A) and for silence zones was in the range of 68.74-73.54dB (A).Except in industrial zone in all other zones the noise levels are beyond limits.
