Title

Synthesis of ferrites by citric acid route and their applications for adsorption of dye

Abstract

Magnesium ferrite (MgFe2O4), Lithium ferrite (LiFeO2) and Cobalt ferrite (CoFe2O4) have been synthesized through citric acid route by using sol-gel method. In this method, citric acid has been used as a precursor. Citric acid helps in homogeneous distribution of the metal ions into solution and acts as chelating agent. As a result, single-phase and nano-sized ferrite particles can be obtained at lower temperature. These ferrite powders have been characterized by using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy. All these ferrite materials have been employed for the adsorption of methylene blue dye from aqueous solutions and effect of varying concentration of dye was also seen on adsorption by ferrite materials. These materials are efficient adsorbents due to their particle size, easy removal from the solution owing to their magnetic nature and reusability.
