Abstract

Aim of this study is to numerically analyze the decay characteristics of subsonic jets of circle and Rectangle exit shape with different aspect ratios (1, 2 & 3) for three different exit Mach numbers (0.3, 0.5 and 0.7). For all the configurations, exit area of the jet is maintained same. In this study, axial total pressure decay, lateral total pressure decay was compared between circular and rectangular. In rectangular jets vortices created by the sharp corners at the nozzle exit are found to enhance the jet mixing with surrounding air. Rectangular jet has larger perimeter at the exit than that of circular jet; this increases the interface area between the jet flow and surrounding air which leads to high mass entertainment. Increase in aspect ratio of rectangular jet increases the jet decay rate and reduces the potential core length.
