Title

Ecocritical Interpretation of Jhumpa Lahiri’s The Lowland

Authors

Abstract

The present-day world has been overshadowed by the gradual growth of a belief that, except mankind, all other living elements are trivial and petty. This anthropocentric attitude is disrupting the harmony of the universe. Apart from this, the unbelievable success of scientific progress has initiated an unavoidable impact of ecological hazards. Consequently, the entire universe is forced to face an ultimate risk of absolute extinction. So, the immediate need of the hour is to convey to contemporary human civilization that the dire consequence of their insensitive and unsympathetic approach to nature will accelerate the insecurity and uncertainty of the so-called strong and powerful homosapients. During this time, many authors have started expressing their concern for this crisis of the civilization. They have pinpointed a variety of aspects that are supposed to be the emergency requirements for caring and nursing the long-neglected injuries found in the ecological environment. Jhumpa Lahiri, the famous Pulitzar prize winner writer, has shown the same anxiety like others regarding the gradual death of nature. In her novel, The Lowland (2013), she has expressed her eco-sensitivity very prominently. In spite of varieties of socio-political issues like the Naxalite Movement, the diasporic echoes and historical accounts, Lahiri does not forget her role as an echo-fighter. At the various phases of the novel, she shows her environmental interest with a clear hint that in spite of various extremely popular ideas, the current ecocritical practice can't be detached from these already acknowledged main-stream theories. It should be given the same amount of acceptance and recognition. Therefore, in this novel, we are given not only an accurate display of political orientation and its consequences but also she provides nature-oriented awareness and its implementations in our day-to-day life. The character of Bela, the daughter of Gauri is groomed by Lahiri very purposefully. She is made the mouthpiece of environmental conservation. So, Bela can be introduced as the representative of the author’s ownself
