A study of the predicament of the immigrants in Mukherjee’s fiction reveals two facts: that they must prepare themselves to embrace the American reality, and that they have to recognize the intersection of the normative cultural values of their native land and the basic principles that constitute American identity. Put another way, it is not merely a problem of adjustment to the culture of the New World, it is a crisis that goes beyond the manifestations of their social reality, a crisis of the epistemic status of cultural identity.
