Title

Study of Microstructure Characteristics and Mechanical Properties of Aluminum Alloy Gas Tungsten Arc Welded Joints

Abstract

Gas Tungsten Arc welding (GTAW) is famous welding technique, used in industries in current age to join aluminum alloys. These materials have been used immensely in aerospace because of their high strength-to-weight ratio Aluminum is the most commonly used material in all types of industries and it is the second material in case of annual consumption after steel. Pure aluminum melts at 6600C, and its alloys are at slightly lower temperature.AA1080 alloy and AA6063 alloy were joined by using Gas Tungsten Arc (GTA) welding with aluminium (ER4043) as a filler metal by varying current, voltage and filler rod diameter. This paper focuses on the study of microstructure characteristics and mechanical properties of Aluminium Alloy Welded joints using GTAW. In the present study it was observed that GTA welded joints have better tensile strength, hardness, impact strength and microstructure compared to other welding processes. The microstructure and mechanical properties of aluminum alloys of GTA welded joint were studied by using Optical Microscopy, Universal Testing Machine, Charpy impact Hardness Tests. It was found that at a welding current of 158A, welding voltage of 80 v and filler rod diameter of 1.6mm the microstructure in weld zone, heat affected zone was observed to be equiaxed grains and script like structures and mechanical properties was observed to be almost near to the base metal.
