The paper proposes a wireless system, based on Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM) network for the monitoring and controlling of the river water level parameters. One of the advantages of the system is that it can be used for monitoring decrease in the water level in the rivers and increase in the water level in case of floods. The system after certain intervals of time continuously sends river water level measurements to the concerned authority. Once the river water reaches the critical level either by decrease in the level or flooding, an alarm will be sent via GSM network to the person in charge. The system also opens and closes the flood gate as per the readings received by the microcontroller thereby timely rerouting the excess amount of water and preventing the flooding. This system uses open access platform Arduino as main controller, ultrasonic sensing equipment.
