Title

Impact of Socio-Economic Status on Rural Livelihoods in Latur and Hingoli Districts of Maharashtra

Abstract

This paper discusses the socio-economic status impact on rural livelihoods in districts of Maharashtra, Latur and Hingoli. Due to a semi-arid climate, the region presents unique challenges and opportunities for rural development. We analyzed indicators such as income levels, education, landholding patterns, employment opportunities, and access to basic amenities by using a mixed-method approach in analyzing primary data gathered from 400 households spread across 20 villages. The findings highlight a strong relationship between the socio-economic status and the quality of rural livelihoods. Households that were better off in terms of income and education had better health care, diversified sources of income, and higher standards of living. On the other hand, socio-economically deprived groups had fewer opportunities, higher vulnerability to climate shocks, and subsistence agriculture. Other factors that affected the gaps in socio-economic outcomes were gender and caste dynamics. The study further underlines how government schemes and local self-governance help in bringing down inequalities. Although a few programs have had positive impacts on livelihoods, there are areas of gaps in implementation and outreach. Targeted interventions such as skill development, enhancement of infrastructure, and financial inclusion are emphasized for bringing up the marginalized communities. This research offers actionable insights for policymakers and development practitioners seeking to promote inclusive growth in rural Maharashtra. It underlines the need for a holistic approach that addresses structural inequalities and enhances the resilience of rural livelihoods in the face of socio-economic and environmental challenges.
