Title

ENHANCEMENT OF WEAR RESISTANCE IN AISI H13 TOOL STEEL BY LIQUID CARBURIZING

Abstract

In metal forming, process tool steels that are used for the shaping of metal will undergo repeated thermal and mechanical load, which result in tool wear over a prolonged usage of the die. This work focused on improving such wear properties of AISI H13 tool steel by the liquid carburizing method in which the samples were heat-treated at 1550°F called low-temperature bath containing 20% cyanide solutions held for 30mins. The hardness was performed on both the raw sample and heat-treated samples and was found to be 28HRC for raw sample and 55HRC for treated samples. Pin on Disk wear test was performed on the samples to investigate the wear behavior of AISI H13 tool steels. The results were compared and it is found that the wear rate decreases for the treated sample and found to be 1.99x10-4 mm3/Nm with the coefficient of friction of 0.56 for treated samples and raw material 2.2 x 10-4 mm3/Nm with a coefficient of friction of 0.44. The microstructure studies were performed and the carbon diffusion was found in the treated sample. The SEM images were taken for the wear test specimen and the wear fractures are found.
