Title

Efficacy Of Parent Child Interaction And Parental Self Esteem With a Video Feedback Intervention in Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder

Abstract

EFFICACY OF PARENT CHILD INTERACTION AND PARENTAL SELF ESTEEM WITH A VIDEOFEEDBACK INTERVENTION IN CHILDREN WITH AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER ABSTRACT Video feedback intervention is based on the review of video clips taken during a participants natural social interactions and have been shown to enhance the quality of parent child interaction and parental well being. The parent child interaction strongly influences the emotional, behavioural and cognitive development of young children. The nature of parent-child interactions differs in families with children with autism spectrum disorder. Botnick, Warreyn and Roeyers (2018), found that mothers used an interaction style characterized by more support and structure, and clearer instructions in interaction with their children without ASD. The parent–child interactions also provide the primary social learning context from infancy. A variety of social-cognitive and socio-emotional processes, such as emotion regulation and recognition, referencing, gaze following, gesturing, and communication, are first evident in parent–child interactions. While there are key parenting behaviours that support growth in social skill acquisition (i.e., warmth, sensitivity, and responsiveness), there are also those that interfere with, or hinder these developmental processes (i.e., parental negativity and over reactivity). The global concept of self esteem is typically defined as the overall affective evaluation of one’s worth, value or importance (Richardson, Ratner & Zumbo, 2009). An increased demand of raising process and its consequences negatively affects self esteem in parents and caregivers of children with ASD. Due to the fact that parent-child interactions involving episodes of sustained play and engagement is critical in the development of autistic children, it is important to provide these parents with the necessary tools to properly stimulate engagement. This study aims at measuring the efficacy of Video Feedback intervention which can be effective in altering parent interactive behaviour in desired ways across child developmental age and family socioeconomic background, thereby improving parental self esteem of children with ASD.
