The people of Jawadhu Hills area are known as “Malayalis” meaning “people of the hills”. Culturally, the tribal people distrust people from the plains due to frequent confrontations with forest guards and the police over smuggling of sandalwood and red sanders. They seek health care only when very sick, leading to higher morbidity and a lower life expectancy. The overall health, literacy and development indicators across age groups as poor, as compared to those living in the plains. This is primarily due to poor health care infra-structure, limited health services, low literacy, lack of quality education, lack of local employment opportunities, dependence on subsistence farming, migratory labor, and poor relationship with the administrative structure.
