Earthquake is a natural phenomenon which occurs due to the release of accumulated stress of tectonic plates inside earth crust, resulting in violent shaking of the ground. In last 15 years, the country has faced 8 major earthquakes with disastrous aftermaths. Indian subcontinent is divided into 4 seismic zones as per the IS code (Zone II, III, IV, V). Zone IV is the highly affected zone marked in India but often Builders and Constructors are careless about ensuring the seismic safety of the buildings which later result in unexpected building failures. A recent structural failure reported in the State of Delhi nearly took 20 lives. In this research, we have analyzed the seismic conditions on G+9 residential building in Zone IV and designed an earthquake resistant building in STADD.PRO as per 1893 IS code and industry standards. This research work highlights the need to bring awareness among local Builders, Masons and general public to ensure the safety of buildings from seismic loads.
