POSITION OF WOMEN AS DEPICTED IN PREM SUMARAG ABSTRACT Position of women in Indian society is always a subject of debate. After Vedic period status of women was continuously deteriorated. Time to time many reformers tried to uplift the position of women. Sikh Gurus also raised their voice for this cause and gave equal status to woman with man in sangat and pangat. When tenth Sikh Guru Gobind Singhji founded Khalsa, he declared some new obligations for Khalsa including men and women. Before his death Guru Gobind Singhji ordered Khalsa to consider Guru Granth Sahib as Guru after him. After his death, there is a period full of struggle for Sikhs. In these circumstances, there was need of the time to produce an accurate portrayal of Sikh code of conduct. So many Rahitnamas (books of code of conduct for Sikhs) came into existence from time to time. Prem Sumarag is one of them which is a lengthy Rahitnama. It is a little known source and its authorship and time period is controversial. Prem Sumarag bears the detail about the social, economic, religious and political aspects and aspirations of the Khalsa at the time it was written. It describes very well the position of women in given historical period.
