Title

Role Of Rehabilitation In The Treatment Of Temporomandibular Disorders: Scientific Evidence

Abstract

Objective: The interest of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of rehabilitative therapy for temporomandibular dysfunction Materials and methods: An electronic search was performed in 3 databases: Pubmed, Google Scholar and Science Direct to identify studies on the effectiveness of rehabilitative therapy on TMJ disorders. The inclusion criteria were: clinical studies of interest to humans, conducted within the last 5 years, whose articles were written in English and had a high level of scientific evidence. The critical reading and the application of the reading grids allowed us to collect 14 articles. Results: The articles retained in our systematic review show that: the rehabilitative treatment acts favorably on the decrease of the pain intensity and the increase of the amplitude of the mouth opening, while the opinions were divided concerning the parameter of the mandibular function. Conclusion: We concluded from this study that rehabilitation is effective in the management of temporomandibular disorder. However, its effectiveness remains dependent on the technique used, the number of sessions per treatment and also the time devoted to each session. Hence the need for further clinical trials taking this parameter into consideration.
