Title

Sucrose derived activated carbons and effects of additives on the adsorbent for removal of pharmaceutical compounds

Abstract

In this study activated carbon is prepared through hydrothermal carbonization of carbohydrate that is sucrose as raw material using different additives at different temperatures the main aim of this study was to investigate the morphology, micropore size distribution of the prepared activated carbon and characterization properties using Scanning Electron Microscopy, X-ray Diffraction Analysis, Particle size analysis, Thermogravimetric Analysis and CHN Analysis. The prepared activated carbon was then used as an adsorbent for removal of pharmaceutical compounds such as Paracetamol, Ibuprofen and Diclofenac using UV-vis Spectrophotometer. These experimental results may help to further more utilize the HTC process to prepare activated carbons for different purpose. It was concluded that the activated carbon with acidic additive as well as without additives proved to be efficient as an adsorbent. While the base additive was not suitable for increasing the particle size and adsorption capacity.
