Levofloxacin is a third-generation fluoroquinolone antibacterial agent with a broad-spectrum activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and atypical pathogens. It shows its bactericidal activity by inhibiting topoisomerase IV and DNA gyrase. Levofloxacin has shown strong antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus species, Streptococcus pyogenes, Streptococcus pneumoniae. It also possesses killing effect on resistant mycobacteria like Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Mycobacterium leprae causing tuberculosis and even Mycoplasma species of HIV infection. It is indicated in the treatment of urinary tract infection, respiratory tract infection, biliary tract infection. Ornidazole is a 5-nitroimidazole derivative active against protozoa and anaerobic bacteria. It is converted to reduction products that interact with DNA to cause destruction of helical DNA structure and strand leading to a protein synthesis inhibition and cell death in susceptible organisms.
