Title

A STUDY TO ASSESS THE EFFECTIVENESS OF STRUCTURED TEACHING PROGRAMME ON KNOWLEDGE REGARDING PREVENTION OF PROTEIN ENERGY MALNUTRITION AMONG MOTHERS OF UNDER FIVE CHILDREN AT BLOCK BHALWAL, JAMMU

Abstract

India is home to 46.6 million stunted children, a third of world’s total as per Global Nutrition report 2018. Nearly half of all under five children mortality in India is attributable to under nutrition. Malnutrition in children occurs as a complex interplay among various factors like poverty, illiteracy, maternal health, home environment, family size, dietary practices, diseases like diarrhea, hand hygiene and other hygiene practices etc. So it is essential to create awareness regarding malnutrition and its consequences to mothers of under five children. A pre experimental one group pre test and post test method was used in this study. The samples were selected by purposive sampling technique. The sample size was 40. A structured questionnaire was used to assess the knowledge regarding prevention of protein energy malnutrition. The responses in pre test showed that 34 (85%) had inadequate knowledge, 4 (10%) had moderate knowledge and 2 (5%) had adequate knowledge. After structured teaching programme, post test result showed that 20 (50%) had adequate knowledge and 20 (50%) had moderate knowledge. There was no significant association between the post test knowledge and demographic variables like age, socio economic status, educational status, type of occupation, number of children, breastfeeding and vaccination. Key words: Protein Energy malnutrition, mothers, under five children
