Title

Implementation of Wavelet Transform Technique for Suppression of Harmonics in an Electric Arc Furnace

Abstract

Power quality has gained worldwide attention both from academicians and industries over the last three decades. There is a new surge of manufacturing and productivity with Industry 4.0 that has accelerated the asset performance management with reduced downtime, increased product quality and improved workspace. But this process has created a major throwback on the quality of power supply. This investigation is mainly based on the power quality problems associated with Industrial Furnaces, especially, electric arc furnace, as it is one of the foremost non-linear loads found in industries. In order to monitor and record the harmonics generated by these electric arc furnaces, Power quality analyzer is used at the installation site. Numerous signal processing methods have been suggested for analysis of signals, such as Fourier transform and Wavelet transform. According to the literature survey, identification and location of power quality issues is more efficient and reliable using wavelet transform compared to Fourier transform. In this work, Wavelet transform technique is implemented to analyze the presence of harmonics in power supply The validity of suppression of harmonics is analyzed by using the performance parameters, viz., Total harmonic distortion (THD), Percentage of reduction in peak amplitude (RPA), Mean square error (MSE), Signal to noise ratio (SNR) and Wavelet energy coefficients, based on wavelet transform techniques.
