Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), the highly contagious infectious disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), has had a catastrophic effect on the world’s demographics resulting in more than 2.9 million deaths worldwide, emerging as the most consequential global health crisis since the era of the influenza pandemic of 1918. Since its emergence in December 2019, the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS–CoV–2) has caused over 240 million confirmed cases and more than 5 million deaths worldwide at the time of writing. The World Health organization (WHO) declared it to be a global pandemic in March 2020. Favipiravir was first used against SARS-CoV-2 in Wuhan and in June 2020, favipiravir received the DCGI approval in India for mild and moderate COVID-19 infections. This study summarizes the effect of favipavir against COVID-19.
