Title

INFLUENCE OF STAFF TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT ON LIBRARIANS JOB PERFORMANCE IN SELECTED UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES IN ANAMBRA STATE, NIGERIA

Abstract

This study sought to ascertain the impact of staff training and development on librarians’ job performance in selected university libraries in Anambra State, Nigeria. Three research questions guided the study. The study adopted descriptive survey research design. Population of the study comprised 67 librarians from College of Medicine and Health Sciences, and Faculty of Pharmaceutical Library in Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka and College of Medicine Library, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Igbariam all in Anambra State. The entire population was studied as the number was manageable. Instrument for data collection was a structured questionnaire and interview.. Out of the 67 questionnaires distributed, only 56 were returned and found usable. Data collected were analyzed using charts and simple percentage. Findings of the study showed that the university management give room for staff training such as workshops/seminars after three years of service. Most of the respondents were also willing to participate in such training when sponsored. However, major constraint to such trainings and staff development was paucity of funds. Based on the findings, it was recommended that Training and re-training of all staff in form of workshops, conferences, seminars ICT etc. should be vigorously pursued and made compulsory. Furthermore, staff training and development needs should be incorporated in the staff conditions of service.Similarly, librarians working in the university library should strive to enrol in relevant staff training and development whether sponsored or not to help them acquire necessary skills needed to cope with the rapid technological advancement of the 21st-century.
