The purpose of this paper is to study the influence of spherical recessed and protruded dimples on the performance characteristics of two-lobe journal bearing. The governing Reynolds equation is solved using finite element method. The numerical code developed in Matlab is validated with the already published results available in the literature. From this numerical study, it has been observed that the recessed dimples created on the two-lobe journal bearing surface gives better performance compared to the protruded dimpled journal bearing for friction variable, whereas dimple textured journal bearing provides better performance compared to the protruded textured and untextured journal bearing for load carrying capacity and flow coefficient. For better performance, recessed and protruded textured bearings must have textures/protrusions in the pressure built-up region of bearing. The results presented here would be quite valuable for the researchers in general and the bearing designers in particular.
