Kawasaki disease has an unknown etiology. It is an acute febrile systemic vasculitis that mainly affects infants and young children, causes coronary artery aneurysms, and can lead to long-term cardiovascular complications, with intravenous immunoglobulin and aspirin being the treatment of choice in many countries. If the patient does not respond, a double dosage of immunoglobulin is given, and various alternative second and third-line therapy options have been suggested in recent years. Even though KD is commonly seen in young children, it can also be observed rarely in adolescents and adults. Early diagnosis and treatment of Kawasaki disease are difficult due to a lack of specific diagnostic techniques and biomarkers. This review has summarized pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, etiology, epidemiology, genetic correlations, interventions to prevent coronary aneurysms, and advances in treatment options. Because treatment of post-COVID-19 multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children is entirely drawn from KD therapy approaches.
