Title

MICROBIOLOGICAL, PHARMACOGNOSTICAL AND PHARMACEUTICAL EVALUATION OF LAGHU SUTASEKHARA RASA

Abstract

Aim and Objective: Migraine is a neurological and a primary headache disorder. It is the second most common cause of headache after tension-type headache. It is an episodic headache associated with certain features such as sensitivity to light, sound, or movement . Nausea and vomiting often accompany the headache. A vivid classification is available accounting of the Shiro Roga where headache is the cardinal feature. To treat the Migraine Laghu Sutashekhara Rasa was taken from Rasa Tarangini (Parishista), well known text of Ayurveda. The present work Microbiological studies pharmacognostical and pharmaceutical evaluation was carried out to standardize the finished product Laghu Sutashekhara Rasa to confirm its identity, quality and purity. Methodology: Preliminary Microbiological studies, Pharmacognostical and pharmaceutical parameters, High-Performance Thin Layer Chromatography has been performed as per Standard method. Result: Microbiological study for Laghu Sutashekhara Rasa revealed absence of any microbial contamination under smear and culture study in aerobic atmosphere after 90 days of sample been prepared. The Pharmacognostical study of ingredients of Laghu Sutashekhara Rasa shows the presence of black debris of Gairika, olioresin of Shunthi and many more. Pharmaceutical analysis of Laghu Sutashekhara Rasa showed that highest weight 506 mg, lowest weight 491mg, average weight 499.5 mg, tablet hardness 2.35kg/cm2 loss on drying 7.06%w/w, water soluble extract 11.6%w/w, methanol soluble extract 2.7% w/w, pH 4.5, iron estimation 7.2%w/w and ash insoluble ash value 30.4%w/wand High-Performance Thin Layer Chromatography at 254 nm resulted into 3 spots and at 366 nm resulted into 12 spots respectively. These parameters of pharmacognosy and pharmaceutical analysis can be used as baseline for future. Conclusion: The standardization of Laghu Sutashekhara Rasa are covered in the current study, additional important analysis investigations are required for the identification of all the active chemical constituents of the test drug to substantiate the clinical efficacy.
