Abstract Background- Dental practitioners’ knowledge and attitude towards the prevention of dental caries has an impact on oral health of the population. The aim of this study was to assess their level of knowledge about preventive dental health. Material and methods- A cross-sectional study was carried out among 128 dental practitioners in Tricity (Chandigarh, Panchkula and Mohali). Knowledge about dental caries at young age was assessed using closed ended multiple choice questionnaire. Statistical evaluation was done using Chi- Square test, T-test and ANOVA. Results- Most of the respondents identified that increased intake of sugar causes caries. Significant variation between respondents was seen in the age, qualification and years of experience. The question concerning formula milk as a risk factor for dental caries at a young age was the only question with a high correct response rate. Conclusion-There is a need to reduce variations and improve dental practitioners’ knowledge in regard to risk and prevention of caries at young age.
