Violence against women is not something new to the Indian society but can be traced back from ancient period till modern times. History has witnessed discrimination towards women in every sphere of life. Different cultures of the world have treated women differently for some she is an object of desire and for others simply chattel, property of the husband who could sell her, disciple her, beat her, suppress her, or even silence her voice without any fear of law. Indian society is also not different as far as status of women is concerned. Some scriptures have depicted her as Shakti but some have portrayed her as powerless, inferior section of the society. India become independent in 1947.The plight of Indian women in the society was pathetic. Empowerment of the women was the aim and objective of the constitution makers who made many laws to protect and improve the status of women in post-independence India by following international conventions of the United Nations. The prime duty of the constitution makers was to prepare a constitution to give equal rights to men and women of this country to build a progressive nation.
