Title

Ayurvedic management of Helicobacter pylori infection- A case report

Abstract

Until the discovery of Helicobacter pylori in 1982, doctors believed that diet, lifestyle, NSAIDS and stress are the main cause of gastritis and peptic ulcer. Helicobacter pylori is now the most common cause of gastritis, peptic ulcer disease, gastric cancer and gastric MALT lymphoma. The treatment for this is triple therapy which includes PPI, clarithromycin amoxicillin and metronidazole and quadruple therapy- bismuth, PPI, tetracycline and nitroimidazole but there is increasing resistance and side effects [2]. In ayurveda, this Bacteria can be co related to sleshmaja krimi based on its site of colonization, signs and symptoms. A 36 years old male patient came with chief complaints of hrit kantha daha, amlodgara, udara shula etc and his upper GI endoscopy revealed positive H. pylori along with superficial antral ulcer. In this case, Kamadudha rasa and Vidanga churna with madhu was selected due to the krimihara, anti H. pylori, anti-microbial, aama pachan, agni deepana, ulcer healing and gastroprotective properties. After 60 days, there is significant improvement in all symptoms and upper GI endoscopy was repeated which shows negative for H. pylori. Ayurveda plays a major role in treating infectious diseases due to increasing antibiotic resistant and side effects of antibiotics.
