Teenagers ingest the seeds or the entire plant to obtain its hallucinogenic and euphoric effects. The troublesome weed, jimson weed (Datura stramonium L.) is a plant with both poisonous and medicinal properties. The neurotoxicity is attributed to the presence of tropane alkaloids which contain a methylated nitrogen atom (N-CH) and include the anticholinergic drugs atropine, and scopolamine, as well as the narcotic cocaine. Fatalities because of Datura species exposure are rare, but adverse effects are very common. Treatment is supportive with the use of physostigmine in more severe cases of poisoning.
